Tim Holmes

Tim studied clarinet and saxophone at the Royal Academy of Music with Georgina Dobree, Richard Addison and Anthony Pay. 

He has performed with all the major London and UK provincial orchestras, as well as in many West End shows, including Guys and Dolls, Carmen Jones, Witches of Eastwick, The Producers, From Here to Eternity, Shrek, Oliver, Groundhog Day.

Tim was a member of the jazz saxophone quartet “Itchy Fingers” for two years and has been a member of the Steve Martland Band. He is currently the tenor saxophone player with the Delta Saxophone Quartet.

Ted White

Ted began his professional career in the mid-1940s as a freelance saxophone and clarinet player. He started arranging with the encouragement of Billy Ternent, in whose band he played for six years, gaining experience of all types of orchestral work. He then worked as a copyist for many of the leading arrangers/composers of the day such as Nelson Riddle, Robert Farnon and many others, giving him the opportunity to learn the craft of orchestration. He spent some thirty years working on radio, T.V., film recordings and theatre, while also attached to the BBC T.V. orchestration office under Ronnie Hazlehurst. During this period he began writing arrangements for seven saxophones to be used by his son David when he was a student at the Royal Academy of Music.  These came to the notice of Sir Simon Rattle, who played them at a London Sinfonietta concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall. Thus Saxpak was born and after three albums are still working together with basically the same personnel, with dates both in this country and abroad.

In the early 1980’s he opened with his son Michael, the musical instrument business which bears the family name. In 1998 he retired to live in Cornwall where he continued to create arrangments for Saxpak and a variety of instrumental ensembles.

Stephen Pierce

Stephen Pierce

Stephen Pierce has maintained a busy and varied schedule as a freelance musician for over 30 years. He has played with most of the major British orchestras including the CBSO under Simon Rattle and the LSO with Andre Previn (on bass sax). 

Stephen’s love of, and involvement with chamber music has spanned his entire career. On leaving the RCM he joined the Marlborough Wind Quintet, subsequently played in the Stadler Ensemble (clarinet, cello and piano) and the Franchi Saxophone Quartet (on baritone). His wind octet Harmoniemusik of London recorded a CD of music by Mozart and Myslivecek for Virgin Records and also performed at the Wigmore Hall.

He is currently a member of the Reineke Trio (with viola and piano) and Saxpac (on bass saxophone).

He is a busy recording artist. He has recorded in excess of 65 complete musicals for TER at Abbey Road with the National Symphony Orchestra and has played for (and appeared in) several films for cinema (most recently The Golden Compass and the film of Mamma Mia) and TV  (Marple and Oliver Twist).

In the theatre, he has worked regularly for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre and has worked in numerous West End shows (soon to be playing in Imagine This at the New London Theatre). He was one of the original musicians on Phantom of the Opera and features on the CD.

Stephen is a former professor of clarinet and saxophone at the London College of Music.

Stan Sulzmann

Stan Sulzmann

Stan Sulzmann is without question one of the most highly respected musicians in the UK today, admired by musicians and audiences for his instantly recognisable sound, and boundless creative imagination, and is a source of inspiration to many of Britain’s emerging young musicians.

Sulzmann’s career stretches back to the ’60s when as part of a uniquely talented crop of British musicians, he played with Graham Collier, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, Gordon Beck, as well as leading many groups of his own.

Since that time Stan has been at the forefront of European contemporary jazz, and his talents have been sought by a host of discerning musicians, including Gil Evans, Mike Gibbs, Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland and Michael Brecker. Constantly in demand as a guest soloist, he has appeared with bands across Europe, including the Hilversum Radio Orchestra, NDR Big Band (alongside Chet Baker), Hanover Radio Symphony Orchestra and the New York Composers Orchestra. 

Further intimate and refreshingly innovative musical partnerships have developed with acclaimed British pianist Nikki Iles, American keyboard player Marc Copland and the trio Ordesa – a drumless, bassless combination with Kenny Wheeler and John Parricellli.

Richard Addison

Richard Addison

Richard Addison has had a successful performing career for over 50 years.  He was a member of The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1974 to 2005. Prior to that, he was with the BBC in Bristol (1968-70), subsequently joining the BBC Midland Light Orchestra in 1971.

Richard has performed with all the country’s leading orchestras and chamber groups as well as playing on countless film scores, West End musicals and recordings.

As a soloist, he has performed concertos and solo works on clarinets and saxophones with the London Sinfonietta, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Contrapunti, BBC Concert Orchestra and The London Ripieno Orchestra.

Richard is highly regarded as a leading teacher and in 1974 was appointed Professor of clarinet and saxophone at The Royal Academy Of Music, a position he held until 2012. He has pupils in many of the country’s orchestras as well as in South Africa, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Finland and Spain.

David White

David White

David White studied at the Royal Academy of Music with John Davis on clarinet and Sir John Dankworth on saxophone. He won the Geoffrey Hawkes Prize for clarinet, adjudicated by Jack Brymer and was a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. 

As a soloist, he has given first performances of several new works and has appeared as a featured soloist on albums by John Barry and Carl Davis. He has performed with symphony orchestras and chamber groups all over the country and was a busy player on commercial recording sessions, for film, television and album tracks. 

David now lives in Cornwall, where he takes an active part in local music-making. He is a founder member and artistic director of the Cornish Sinfonia, which has given performances at the Hall For Cornwall, Eden Centre and other venues in the county and has premiered new works by leading composers.

He is a member of the contemporary chamber group Kevos, directed by Patrick Bailey. David is a collaborator with the choreographer, Jacky Lansley and was the soloist in the saxophone concerto by Lindsay Cooper, which was performed at the Hall For Cornwall and in the Clore Theatre at the Royal Opera House.    

Andy Findon

Andy Findon

TAs a London-based musician since the mid-1970s, Andy Findon has appeared on countless albums, film, and TV scores. He has been involved in just about every genre of performance from serious orchestral work and session recording to rock bands. Andy has worked throughout his career on varied chairs in London’s West End theatre, playing many instruments, including sax, clarinet, ethnic flutes, and flutes. As well as his enviable reputation as a master performer on the flute, Andy has been Michael Nyman’s baritone saxophonist since 1980. Personal recording projects include 2 multi-tracked CDs and several solo albums as well as writing and production for several “library” music companies. Many of his compositions now feature on TV and film productions. He is a member of the “The Home Service”, winners of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2012 (best live act) and the legendary medieval prog rock band “Gryphon”. Andy’s vast array of sounds appear on a series of high-profile sampling packages, entitled “Andy’s Kitbag”, produced by Spitfire Audio.
